On Tuesday, October 4, 1988, the state of Oklahoma experienced one of its most severe October tornado outbreak on record. At least 22 tornadoes touched down across the state, including seven in northeastern Oklahoma. The most significant tornado in eastern Oklahoma was an F2, which carved a 27-mile path from Okfuskee County to Okmulgee County. In the small community of IXL (Okfuskee County), nearly every structure sustained some level of damage. A house, two mobile homes, four businesses, and a public building at IXL Park were completely destroyed. In Haydenville (Okfuskee County), two single-family homes and a mobile home were also destroyed, while the Haydenville Fire Station suffered major damage. Four people inside the mobile home were injured, one critically. A damage survey revealed that the tornado’s path reached up to three miles wide at times, suggesting the presence of multiple smaller tornadoes rotating around the main tornado.
