On the evening of Wednesday, April 19, 2000, a tornado touched down southwest of Parsons, Kansas, and entered the city at approximately 8:45 PM CDT. The event resulted in widespread damage throughout the community. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, Kansas, the tornado maintained an F1 intensity for the majority of its track; however, upon entering the city limits, it intensified to an F3. The tornado’s path extended for at least 12 miles in length and reached approximately a quarter mile in width. The tornado caused damage to at least 600 homes and over 100 commercial properties. Among the most severely affected structures were a carnival, a movie theater, and a law enforcement center, all of which sustained major damage. In total, 27 individuals were reported injured, with most injuries categorized as minor. The NWS reported that approximately 30 square blocks within the city were destroyed, and an additional 30 to 60 blocks sustained moderate damage.
