On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the NOAA Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, OK issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of southern Kansas. Earlier in the day forecasts had mentioned the potential of damaging winds and very large hail. By afternoon and evening, supercells and clusters of storms developed north of the Wichita metropolitan area, moving across central and south-central Kansas. These storms intensified and produced widespread damaging winds and large hail, with sizes ranging from pea-sized to golf balls to ping-pong balls, and even the size of baseballs. In McPherson County and in Saline County there were some reports of baseball size hail. Roof damage was reported in the city of McPherson at the Elyria Christian School, which canceled classes Thursday after part of its roof was tore off. In Sedgwick County, the Wichita metro, hail sizes ranged from pea size and up to baseball size; leaving many vehicles with dents and shattered windows. Some of the measured wind gusts include: 75 mph near Maize (3 miles SE), 71 mph at McConnell AFB, and 58 mph at the Wichita Eisenhower Airport. Besides damage to buildings, vehicles, vegetation, and possibly unprotected livestock, the storms also knocked out power to at least 5,000 customers in the Wichita area; service would be restored later that evening
